Interview + Giveaway: Jennifer Turner

Who is Jennifer Turner?

Jennifer Turner lives in Bowling Green, Ohio, with her husband, twelve year old daughter, and two cats. She regularly claims one of the aforementioned takes far more work than the others to maintain-but she won't share which one. She's the middle child between two brothers, an the favorite of her parents. Of course, that's always subject to opinion. Jennifer began her writing career as a self-published romance author, but is now represented by Robert Gottlieb, Chairman of Trident Media Group.

INTERVIEW

Q: Eternal Hearts is the title of your latest book that we are featuring here at The Book Nympho today. What tidbits can you tell us about it?

A: At its core, I really think Eternal Hearts is a story about two people who are afraid they don’t deserve to be loved. Toni (the heroine) and Drake (the hero) have both made mistakes in the past that they aren’t proud of, but each is constantly working to be better in their own way. Even though she’s a young vampire, Toni holds tight to the people she cares for and never lets an opportunity slip by to show someone how much they mean to her. Drake, on the other hand, has been supernatural since birth, and while his friends aren’t always the most humane beings on the face of the planet - he never asks them to be anything more than themselves. The problem is, a few years ago Toni lost something extremely important to her…and Drake has more to do with the situation than either one of them realize.

Q: Eternal Hearts is the second book in the Darkness Within series; do you currently know how many books you have planned for the series? Please, please say that Odin is getting his own book!

A: Right now, I have roughly 15 books planned for the series. And yes, Odin will have his own book. His book, Eternal Embers, is slated to be book #5. However, you’ll get to meet his heroine, Dahalia, in book #4, Eternal Desires. ;)
15! I'm in heaven. ::Drools:: Odin! Odin! ~ Nympho

Q: Inspiration: Where does it come from?

A: Well, the inspiration to write romance overall came from my Mom. She’s been an avid romance reader all of her life, and when I made the decision to try writing a book, I definitely wanted to write something she’d want to read. And then I guess I could also “blame” Sherrilyn Kenyon, because Night Play was actually the first romance novel I ever bought on my own. Needless to say, I’ve been hooked on the paranormal romance genre ever since. :)

When it comes to characters and storylines, my inspirations usually come from situations happening to people I know, and sometimes even from people or events I see while I’m out, but more often than not they come from my Husband. I consider myself extremely lucky to have a man in my life who doesn’t mind spending hours helping me work through twisted plotlines and character development. He’s a pretty tough critic when it comes to complex or interwoven plots. Of course, he’s also ridiculously good at ripping them apart too, which is probably good since he’s currently in college with the hopes of joining the CIA or FBI. :) He’s never had a problem telling me a scene is poorly written, that a plotline is faulty, or that a character isn’t believable…and I love him for it.

Q: Why did you choose to write in the paranormal genre?

A: I’ve always loved vampires and otherworldly creatures. And the idea of being able to create my own world for not only vampires to play in, but other supernaturals as well, was just too tempting to pass up. ;) Plus, the paranormal romance genre allows for a good dose of horror before the characters find their happy ending, and I can’t imagine ever writing a novel that doesn’t have at least a few mild horror elements in it.

Q: I know you have an agent and are working on getting your books published through a publishing company, but can you tell us a little bit about being a self-published author? Does it give you more freedom?

A: The first thing I can tell you about being self-published is that it’s a lot of work! I handle everything myself, cover design, print & e-book formatting, editing (I had some help from my agent with Eternal Hearts though, which was awesome!), and I essentially own my own business, Dark Dreams Press. However, I do think self-publishing offers more freedom than traditional publishing. Granted, I’d love to see the Darkness Within series get picked up by a traditional publisher, and I’d practically jump at the chance to work with a professional editor, but I’m also terrified of not being able to tell certain character’s stories the way I think they need to be told. There are a lot of horror elements in my series…and I’m not sure all of them would fly with a traditional editor/publisher. That’s where the freedom aspect comes in with regard to self-publishing. I’m able to tell the character’s stories exactly how I want to, and the only opinions I have to worry about when the day is over are the ones coming from my readers…which to me, are always the most important. :)

Q: Would you like to share with my readers any other books that you have in the works, or events in the future that you would like them to know about?

A: Right now, I’m working on the final revision of Eternal Embrace (book #3). This book is, without a doubt, one of the darkest of the series and is also one of my personal favorites! Here’s the back cover blurb:

Lydia Vincent finds little worth in anyone or anything, save herself and her ability to see the truth in everything. At least, what she perceives to be true. She's not looking for love, not looking for acceptance, and she certainly doesn't need some man messing up her life.
Forced to endure a malevolent ritual thousands of years ago, Oktober sees the world through the jaded eyes of a predator. He's a cold-blooded killer, whose only use for humans is food. But he’s about to get the shock of his immortal life – because the one human who won't fall to the curse of his blood – is the one woman who doesn't want a damn thing to do with him.
When the rise of an Ancient enemy lures Oktober and Lydia together, can Oktober ignore the dark instincts urging him to kill her? Can Lydia put her past behind her and find a way to accept Oktober as he is? Can destiny withstand two people who'll fight it to the bitter end...even if it means dying?
I can't wait to read this one after meeting Oktober in EH! ~ Nympho
