Author Interview with Kristen Painter

Help me welcome to The Book Nympho today, the author of the House of Comarré series, Ms. Painter. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions for me and my readers.

Thanks for having me!

MY REVIEW
I love UF and PNR books for different reasons. If I want gritty action with some sexual tension on the side I pick up UF, if I want more sex and romance with my story I go for PNR. As a writer of both which to you find “easier” to write?

That’s a tough question. My paranormal romances tend toward the lighter side with a touch of humor, whereas my urban fantasy books are definitely dark and action-y. In real life, I’m much more like my PNR’s – snarky and always ready with a come back, although my UF’s helped me tap into my dark side. I still haven’t answered the question, have I? I guess the UF’s might be a little tougher in that they require me to dig deeper emotionally.

There are so many different sub-genres in the world of reading and on your website it labels you as a Gothic Urban Fantasy Author. What’s the difference between Gothic UF and UF?

Think Anne Rice vs. Jim Butcher. Does that help? Gothic tends to imply a mix of horror and romance, which not all UF necessarily has. Or at least not in the same amount that maybe mine does.

For those who have not read the House of Comarré series yet, what can they expect?

Action, sexual tension, lots of interesting characters and plenty of plot twists.

When I read the part about Wyspers’ screams being deadly to vampire I pictured The Gentlemen in the episode of Buffy where she screamed at the end and their heads exposed. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a huge part in pop culture and I was wondering if you are a Buffy fan?

To be honest, I’ve seen the first season of Buffy and about half of the second. I like it, I just came to it late and have been too busy to watch the rest. Someday! I’m much more of an Angel fan.

I really like that your vampires are a little different from the common ones you read about. I love Preacher and how he was turned into a vamp. I don’t think I’ve read about another vamp like him. How did you come up with his character?

He just came to me. I like taking the accepted and skewing it, so Preacher was a product of my warped mind.

I am super excited to be attending AADNOLA in August. Which of your books will you be promoting there? And do you know yet what you will be reading from during your time at the Urban Fantasy reading?

I’ll probably be promoting OUT FOR BLOOD, book 4 in the House of Comarré series, but I’ll most likely be reading from BLOOD RIGHTS. Although there’s a hotel scene in BAD BLOOD that people talk about quite a bit. Might read that. Not sure yet.

Now for some quickie questions.

Fangs or furr? Can’t I have both? My cats do.

Favorite supernatural movie or tv show? Moonlight! Man, that show did NOT last long enough.

What ya reading? Currently working my way through the RITA books I’m judging, so due to the nature of the contest, I can’t tell you!

Again thank you for joining us today and I can’t wait to meet you at AADNOLA. Do you have any other signings or appearances you would like to share with us?

I’ll be appearing and signing at the Barbara Vey Reader Event in Milwaukee on April 10th, where you can also have lunch with me! And I’ll be at the Romantic Times Convention in Chicago for the April 14th signing.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A little about me: I’m a former college English teacher, but I’ve held a crazy mix of other jobs including maitre’d for Wolfgang Puck, personal trainer, and sales for Christian Dior Bijoux. On the writing side of things, I’m a two-time Golden Heart finalist and have been on the board of three different RWA chapters. What can I say? I like getting involved. I’m not adverse to bossing people around either.

My forays into writing have been as varied as the jobs I’ve held. I’ve written poetry, articles for magazines, short stories, paranormal romances (that include fantasy, contemporary and steampunk genres) and now I’ve found a home with urban fantasy. I love worldbuilding and few genres give you the kind of license urban fantasy does.

I’m also the co-founder of the award-winning writer’s site Romancedivas.com. I blog occasionally at www.fictionistas.blogspot.com and tweet at twitter.com/Kristen_Painter more often than I should. You can also find me on my Facebook author page here: www.facebook.com/KristenPainterAuthor
