Cassandra Carr Stops By

Are you influenced by character attributes?
by Cassandra Carr

The premise for my book Talk to Me is built around the heroine's attraction to the hero (duh), but there's a little bit of a twist- it's his voice that really gets her going. The entire book came to be as a result of that one character attribute. Obviously it was a critical detail, so I had to consider long and hard what I wanted Drew's voice to sound like.

Smooth? Controlled? Raspy? Low? Crisp?

Drew is a retired hockey player. Not a Wayne Gretzky type, and not a goon, but not someone the opposing team wants on the ice when they try to take a cheap shot at somebody. He's six-foot-three and weighs over two hundred pounds. Are you getting a little bit of an idea of what type of man Drew is?

Now consider this - how his voice is described in the book:

mesmerizing—rough yet sensual somewhat gravelly wrapped around her like a silken thread rough timbre sexy rasp rough yet strangely melodic

Wow, apparently I should've found another synonym for "rough". Oops. ;-)

Given how his voice is described, what other things/personality traits would you attribute to this man? As a reader, did you ever consider how much the little details like these help shape your perception of a character?

Radio producer Jamie MacMahon is in over her head with ex-hockey player-turned host Drew Milan. She’s attracted to the man who earned the nickname “the Beast” during his playing days from the moment they meet, but he’s her boss and she loves her new job. She’s made plenty of mistakes with men and loathes the thought of being yet another plaything for Drew, a man who sleeps with women but doesn’t date them.

Drew doesn’t want to lose a great producer and knows Jamie deserves a real relationship, but can’t stay away from the sizzling chemistry they create every time they’re together. Jamie’s insecurities and the very real prospect of having to leave a great job if this thing doesn’t work out clash hard with Drew’s fears about opening his heart and the possibility of losing his first competent producer.

  2. Voice really is important. I don't know what it is about Texans, but they seem to have the best voices. Every so often I hear a man who turns my head. :)
