UF Audio Review: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1)
Gunmetal Magic

Narrated by Renee Raudman
★★★★
Some people have everything figured out—Andrea Nash is not one of those people. After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles. All she can do is to try to put herself back together, something made easier by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend Kate Daniels.

When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano—the male alpha of the Clan Bouda and Andrea’s former lover—die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate…and must work with Raphael. As Andrea’s search for the killer leads her into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta, she knows that dealing with her feelings for Raphael might have to take a back seat to saving the world…

REVIEW:

I’m going to go ahead and say it and I know I will get a few things thrown at me but I liked Roman more than Raphael. I hope that he gets his own book. Yes, yes, Raphael is sexy and I like him with Andrea better but I want to find out more about Roman.

Ok, so Gunmetal Magic is a spin-off of Kate Daniels series, set in the same world. Much like what Jeaniene Frost did with her Night Huntress series. It can be read as a stand alone if you have not read the KD series but I highly recommend reading it if you have not. You will get some background on the Andrea and the world if you do. Gunmetal Magic follows the same rules and flow of that of Kate's series and fans will love it. If you are not a fan yet you could use Gunmetal Magic as your introduction into Ilona Andrew's writing style.

Andrea is Kate’s best friend and Gunmetal Magic is told through Andrea’s POV and the timeline is parallel to that of Magic Slays. Kate and Curran make a few short appearances.

One of Kate's appearances is the office scene that took place in Magic Slays where Kate walks in to see Andrea in her warrior beast form is played out again in Gunmetal Magic but through Andrea’s eyes this time. But my favorite Kate and Andrea scene is the one where Kate helps Andrea get revenge on Raphael for the B&E he did to her apartment. I was laughing and smiling the whole time while I listened to that scene. GREAT STUFF!

Andrea spends the span of the book finding her place in the world after loosing her job because of you being outed as a shifter. She finally comes to terms that she can no longer ignore the Pack. She and Raphael work through their relationship issues. All in all Gunmetal Magic is a great addition to the Kate Daniels world and is a must read for fans. And I dare say that Andrea gives Kate a run for her money in the bad ass department.

Did those nice church ladies come by again?" - Andrea

He nodded. "I asked them if a man died and then the woman remarried, and then the three of them met in heaven, would it be a sin for them to have a threesome, since they were all married in God's eye. And they decided they were late to be somewhere else.” - Ascanio

  1. The scene where they're in Raphael's place was hilarious. I was really glad to see Kate and Curran without feeling like they took over Andrea's book.
