Movie Reviews - Hansel & Gretel / Warm Bodies

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Rated R
88 mins

In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.

Director & Writer: Tommy Wirkola
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton

My thoughts:

I went into Hansel & Gretel knowing it was not going to be an Oscar worthy movie and I was fine with that.

Plot was a good twist on the old fairy tale. Acting was good for the type of movie it was. Special effects was pretty cool.

If I didn't know better I would have sworn that Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the blood bath fairy tale. The killings was right up there with Tarantino's signature blood spray. It was awesome in all it's goriness.

I almost didn't buy that Hansel and Gretel was brother and sister at times. I kept waiting for them to make out. They were a little to touchy for siblings IMO.

Overall I enjoyed the movie. Would I watch it again, probably not.

Warm Bodies
Rated PG-13
97 min

After R (a highly unusual zombie) saves Julie from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

Director: Jonathan Levine
Writers: Jonathan Levine (screenplay), Isaac Marion (novel) Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich

My thoughts:

Again I knew this was not going to be an Oscar night at the movies.

I've not read the book and I won't now that I've seen the movie.

Warm Bodies is at the other end of the zombie scale than The Walking Dead. With it's cheeky humor and "old" school soundtrack. I felt like I was watching a modern day spin on Romeo and Juliet with zombies or Twilight but with zombies and BETTER acting.

I laughed and made an inappropriate joke when Julie asked why R didn't eat her.

Much of Warm Bodies R has an inner monologue since he is a zombie and can't talk well. But as the movie progresses he starts to become more human. All the zombies start to be better after they see R and Julie holding hands. Their members start coming back.

Warm Bodies is a more of a feel good type movie than the gore fest other zombie movies. But if you don't mind your zombies with a side of romantic comedy then Warm Bodies is worth the price of a movie ticket.

Would I watch it again? Sure when it hits Redbox and if my husband wanted to watch it.

Rating: B-

  2. I also find it weird how as siblings who grew up together have different accents
