Phineas, The Pervy Unicorn

Of all the characters I’ve written, probably none are quite as popular as a certain pervy unicorn by the name of Phineas. Equal parts obnoxious and noble, the diminutive beastie is far more complex then he usually lets on.

And he’s very, very observant. (And makes no bones about telling the other characters what he thinks, regardless of how inappropriate it may be.)

Although often used as comic relief, particularly in A Brush of Darkness, we do learn more of his reasons for being where he is in A Sliver of Shadow…and finally we see his true purpose come to light in A Trace of Moonlight. (And not without a little sacrifice on his part.)

That being said, I get a lot of questions about him – where he comes from, how old he is, what’s his favorite movie, you name it! So here’s a basic character sheet:

Phineas:

Species:  Unicorn, of the miniature variety. Stands about 18 inches tall at the shoulder, though he’s fond of lying about it, so don’t expect a straight answer. I wouldn’t ask him about his height at all, frankly. It’s a sensitive subject, though he’s very apt at using his small size to find out information. He’s used to be overlooked due his small stature and uses it to his advantage.

Physical:  Typical medieval sort of unicorn – cloven hooves, lion’s tail, bearded. All white, except for his blue eyes. Sometimes wears a silver chain with a blue aquamarine around his neck.

Age:  Probably around 1000. Part of the reasons he’s so crotchety and jaded. He was more or less pulled out of retirement to get involved with Abby, and while he doesn’t regret that, he *is* feeling his age a bit more these days.

Eats:  Anything. Fond of bacon and rum, in particular, but isn’t overly picky. Obviously somewhat carnivorous. Don’t ask him about this either.

Likes:  Porn, in particular wombat, though he will watch anything. Rolling around in Abby’s underwear drawer. Biting people on the ass. Masturbating in suitcases. Has a fondness for reading e e Cummings poetry, but won’t admit it. Also likes babies. (Not to eat, mind – he tones down his more unsavory side in the presence of the truly innocent.)

He enjoys playing video games, thought it’s really anyone’s guess how he manipulates the keyboard that well. If you ask him how, you’re going to get an answer involving his genitalia. Fair warning.

Dislikes:  Virgins.

Favs:

Movie:  He’s a sucker for classic B&W, but secretly enjoys The Last Unicorn, because Amalthea is a total babe.

Music:  He’s partial to Lady Ga Ga

Book:  Lady Chatterly’s Lover

Drinking from the waters of lethe and offering herself up as Faerie’s sacrificial Tithe …these just might be the least of Abby Sinclair’s problems.

Abby’s pact with a demon—whether or not she remembers making it—is binding, so she’d better count herself lucky that (in the words of a daemon who knows better) there’s nearly always a loophole. But her friends’ reckless attempts to free her, well intentioned though they may be, set off a disastrous chain of events. In no time at all, Abby turns her incubus lover mortal and gets herself killed, cursed, and married to an elven prince whose mother wants her dead. She might have even been able to recover from all that had she not lost the Key to the CrossRoads to her mortal enemy, who promptly uses his restored power to wreak havoc on the OtherWorld and put its very existence in jeopardy.

Only one person can make things right again, but to find her, Abby must place her trust in allies of mixed loyalties, and conquer her nightmares once and for all.

A marine biologist in a former life, Allison Pang turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once. She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.

She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.

Drinking from the waters of Lethe and offering herself up as Faerie’s sacrificial Tithe . . . these just might be the least of Abby Sinclair’s problems.

Abby’s pact with a daemon—whether or not she remembers making it—is binding, so she’d better count herself lucky that (in the words of a daemon who knows better) there’s nearly always a loophole. But her friends’ reckless attempts to free her, well intentioned though they may be, set off a disastrous chain of events. In no time at all, Abby turns her incubus lover mortal, then gets herself killed, cursed, and married to an elven prince whose mother wants her dead. On top of everything else, she’s lost the Key to the CrossRoads to her mortal enemy, who promptly uses his restored power to wreak havoc on the OtherWorld and put its very existence in jeopardy. Only one person can make things right again, but to find her, Abby must place her trust in allies of mixed loyalties, and conquer her nightmares once and for all.

REVIEW:

The story begins a few weeks after Abby drank the Lethe water and she is living in the Faery Court with no memory of herself other than what Talivar has shared with her: her name and their plan to marry. When she's contacted by Brystion in the Dreaming, he sets off a chain of events that have devastating results for just about everyone.

Abby doesn't get many breaks but continues to think her way through each challenge using her extraordinary instincts and heart. As with the first two books, the action is almost continuous, the fantasy is creative, the villains are diabolical and no one seems to be immune from potential harm. Abby still is torn between Tavilar and Brystion, loving both of them but in different ways. You'll be just as confused as they present their best and less attractive sides and her decision about them is unpredictable.

This final book in the trilogy doesn't disappoint and kept me in emotional turmoil through the end. It provides the answers we were hoping to find but also leaves many details unresolved (not in a bad way but left to our imaginations). I'm not ready to let go of these characters who are so complex, flawed and interesting. They have a certain nobility because of their quest to do the right thing but are far from perfect. They'll stay with me for quite some time and my hope is that we will see them again in a spinoff. If so, those stories will have a high bar to reach in meeting or surpassing the excitement of Abby's adventures in this series.

UF Review: A Sliver of Shadow By Allison Pang

A Sliver of Shadow
By Allison Pang
(Abby Sinclair #2)
Published February 28th 2012 by Pocket
★★★

Just when her new life as a TouchStone – a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds – seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate’s away…let’s just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.

The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faerie is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell. Along with her brooding elven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen’s magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she’s making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.

REVIEW:

If you haven't read the first book, Stop! There are events discussed here from that story that may be spoilers for you.

The story picks up six months from the end of the first book. Abby is coping with (or trying to) her breakup with Brystion. Moira leaves for the Faery Court and soon after, all hell breaks loose and Abby's in charge. Talivar is still staying with Abby as her personal bodyguard, along with Phineas the unicorn and Benjamin, Moira's baby who she left in Abby's care.

Unlike the first book, this story takes off seemingly from the first page. Abby still has missteps but she's still got very good instincts and has gained the respect of those OtherFolk in Portsmyth. When an Elven woman shows up claiming to be the new Protectorate, Abby kicks into high gear to determine the authenticity of the claim and figure out what's going on. With Talivar and Phineas at her side, she stumbles into one discovery after another, including astonishing revelations about her own past. Her relationship with Talivar develops into an intimate one and becomes more complicated when Brystion re-enters the picture. Together they navigate the complicated Faery world in an attempt to have the Queen reopen the CrossRoads and stave off a war with the daemons from Hell.

The story is fast paced and all action. Even though the love triangle (hate them) is a constant, it doesn't overwhelm and they have to work in tandem. I haven't decided yet whether I'm team Brystion or team Talivar (leaning towards him) as they both are extremely appealing in different ways.

Abby continues to use good judgment as she faces the unknown and grapples with understanding the protocols and politics of a foreign world. There are so many twists and shifts here in this fantastical world that you can't stop reading for fear you won't keep up. I had a tough time finding stopping points that didn't keep me from rushing back when life showed up.The ending was so startling, exciting and surprising I didn't have a choice but to jump right into the next book. This was spectacular!

UF Review: A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang

A Brush of Darkness
By Allison Pang
(Abby Sinclair #1)
Published January 25th 2011 by Pocket Books
 ★★★

The man of her dreams might be the cause of her nightmares. Six months ago, Abby Sinclair was struggling to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Now, she has an enchanted iPod, a miniature unicorn living in her underwear drawer, and a magical marketplace to manage. But despite her growing knowledge of the OtherWorld, Abby isn't at all prepared for Brystion, the dark, mysterious, and sexy-as- sin incubus searching for his sister, convinced Abby has the key to the succubus's whereabouts. Abby has enough problems without having this seductive shape-shifter literally invade her dreams to get information. But when her Faery boss and some of her friends vanish, as well, Abby and Brystion must form an uneasy alliance. As she is sucked deeper and deeper into this perilous world of faeries, angels, and daemons, Abby realizes her life is in as much danger as her heart—and there's no one she can trust to save her.

REVIEW:

I had two separate experiences with this book: the beginning, where you are mired in a world that you know nothing about and are in a state of near constant confusion; and, the second half where you're so riveted by the story you can't turn the pages fast enough. Funny how my feelings seemed to mirror that of the heroine, Abby Sinclair, and I believe this may have been the designed effect of the author and pretty brilliant. I suffered through the beginning, almost to the point of quitting but was utterly hooked by the second half of the story and settled in for a very interesting ride.

The story begins with Abby continuing to behave as if everything is normal, even though it's been four months since she's seen Moira, Protectorate of the Faery, her employer and the person she's responsible for as a TouchStone (mortal who provides those immortals or OtherFolk the ability to cross between worlds). Abby's pretty clueless about her role and Moira's world and those around her thinks she's pretty lame as a TouchStone for the most important immortal residing in the human world. When things start to get dicey, it becomes impossible to keep Moira's disappearance secret. It also becomes clear that something more is amiss when other disappearances come to light. Abby might be hapless initially but we end up seeing she has lightning sharp instincts that become invaluable.

While this is considered to be fantasy, there's much more paranormal romance than expected when Abby becomes involved with Brystion, a daemon incubus who infiltrates her mind but also gives her the awareness that she's a Dreamer. I normally don't like dream sequences but after a bit, they become such a natural part of the action and are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the story. Brystion and Abby's relationship is sensual and unusual, but one that is often problematic.

Pang has created an utterly fascinating world with layered, complicated characters and if you can be patient through the first half, you'll get your payoff with the second. Abby is both frustrating at times and insightful at others. She's an enigma with a snarky sense of humor and a big heart. Oh, and there's a perverted unicorn that shows up that will keep you in stitches. The ending was a surprise and had me jump right into the next book so be forewarned.
