Review: Shadow Hunter by Kait Ballenger

After Dark
by Gena Showalter , Kait Ballenger
(Execution Underground, #0.5)

Shadow Hunter

Vampire hunter Damon Brock's first assignment with the Execution Underground is Rochester, New York, a city crawling with the undead. But he isn't the only hunter in town gunning for vamp blood. Tiffany Solow is fierce and ruthless when it comes to slaying the monsters that destroyed her family-and she works solo. But being alone is no longer so desirable when she meets the mysterious hunter who wants more than just her turf. As they work to massacre the local covens, the line between good and evil blurs when they are forced to decide between their lifelong beliefs... and their newfound hearts.

I only read Shadow Hunter by Kati Ballenger.

Set Up: Supes are unknown by humans with the exception of the Execution Underground, think special ops warriors that hunt all kinds of supes.

Hero: Damon is a member of the Execution Underground and it specializes in hunting vampires. And he is Über sexy! He is looking for one bloodsucker that killed his partner. When he finds where the vamp is, he hopes to not run into her.

Heroine: The her being, Tiffany. Tiffany is the little sister of Damon's dead partner. The two wrote letters to each other for years as part of a program the EU forces on their warriors when they are in need of making a personal connection so that they don't go all killer. Damon chooses Tiffany as his "pen pal" since she is the little sister of his partner, thinking she will be a safe choice since she was only 16 at the time.

I also like that the heroine is no whiny chick. After the death of her brother she starts hunting vamps in hope of killing the bloodsucker that caused her brother's death.

What I liked: I liked that Damon and Tiffany had a connection that was built over a few years. So it's believable that they are in love with each other. We don't get that instant-a-love thing. We do get instant-a-lust the first time they meet face to face.

What I wasn't too crazy about: Another 22 year old virgin. (eye roll) After reading Tiffany and Damon's story I guess it's plausible that she could still be a virgin at 22 when you see that she is in love with Damon before she even meets him. No other man peaks her interest so it' could be that she is subconsciously saving herself for Damon.

Will I read this author again? Yeah. I'm looking forward to reading Twilight Hunter and I hope we get answers to the cliffhanger we're left with at the end of Shadow Hunter.

Review: Blood Vine by Amber Belldene

Blood Vine
by Amber Belldene
(Blood Vine #1)
Source: From author for honest review

In Blood Vine, bites are an inconvenient bliss, exiled vampires are wasting away, and the fate of their kind depends on the perfect PR campaign.

When public relations pro Zoey Porter arrives at an enchanting California winery, she discovers her sexy new client is the almost one-night stand she can’t forget. After her husband’s suicide, Zoey has vowed never to risk her heart again. But can she walk away from the intriguing winemaker a second time?

Driven from Croatia by his ancient foes, vampire Andre Maras has finally made a blood-like wine to cure his fellow refugees. Now he needs Zoey’s PR expertise to reach them. After his wife’s death, Andre has a vow of his own—never to risk another painful blood bond. And one taste of the tempting Zoey would bind him to her eternally.

His secrets stall her PR plans. Her jealousy is stoked by the blissed-out beauties leaving his bedroom. At every turn, he utterly fails to resist her. When she discovers he is a vampire, will she be lost to the golden-eyed Hunters, or lose herself to the emptiness in her heart, before she can help him save his kind?

Zoey Porter is PR executive who is sent to out to Northern California wine country to design a campaign for Andre Maras's new vineyard and new wine. She is young, professional, level headed, straight forward, but lonely, a bit lost and has been morning the death of her husband for the past few years. She had no desire for any permanent attachments, which is clear from the beginning since she is sleeping with her boss, Ethan - who she doesn't really seem to like...at least, that's the vibe I got from the opening scene. But, after working with Andre, she can't deny that there is something happening between them.

Andre Maras is an ancient vampire searching for his long lost people. He has created a wine that gives him and his family members strength, allowing them to feed less often and possibly curing their wasting disease. He wants to reach out to the underground vampire community by marketing his wine just right. He reaches out to the firm Zoey works for, which so happens to be owned by vampire hunters - Ethan and his brother. Ethan, who knows Andre is a vampire, purposely sends Zoey out to the vineyard, hoping to use her to gain inside information on Andre and his family, who plans to attack.

Blood Vine was an extremely interesting book. I enjoyed this twist on vampires. I liked the idea of the wine and Ms. Belldene's take on how vampires are created and live. The loves scenes were nice and steamy and the romance between the main characters developed well.

I gave this book 3 of 5 stars for a couple of reasons. Mainly, I just didn't identify with the heroine. I didn't like how she was emotionally unavailable. I understand, losing her husband was horrible, but she had been morning him for years and selecting to engage in meaningless sexual relationship. She had sworn off love, romance, and shied away from happiness or fear of getting hurt again. Now, I don't usually add spoilers to my reviews, but I have to say this: After she found out Andre is a vampire, she leaves him and calls Ethan and spills everything she learned about him. Ethan then confesses that he is a hunter and tells her he sent her there on purpose, then she goes to to Andre to warn him about Ethan...

Andre, on the other hand, I liked. Then again, I haven't come across a sexy vampire I don't like :) Kos and Bel, Andre's sons were also wonderful characters and hope each gets their own book. However, I do have to add, there were a lot of characters to keep track of.

Overall, this was a good book and solid beginning to a new series. I'm interested see what else Ms. Belldene has in store for her readers.

Amanda Reviews Bound by the Night by Cynthia Eden

Bound by the Night
by Cynthia Eden
(Bound #4)
Source: Purchased

For the last fifteen years, vampire queen Iona has been dead to the world. Trapped under the power of a brutal curse, she has been helpless. A prisoner, locked within her own still body. Then alpha werewolf Jamie O’Connell fights his way to her side. After defeating the guards that surround her, Jamie gives Iona his blood…and she rises.

The world has changed a great deal in the last fifteen years, and Iona has changed, too. Once known as the Blood Queen because of her dark reputation, she now finds herself longing for the blood of only one man…only he isn’t just a man. She wants the blood of her werewolf—Jamie’s blood. But Iona doesn’t realize that Jamie has been keeping secrets from her. Very dark, dangerous secrets. And Iona may have traded one curse for another.

Now that he has Iona, Jamie vows to never let her go. He needs his Blood Queen in order to defeat his enemy, he needs her to make his own beast stronger, and…he just needs her. Jamie has risked his life to claim Iona, and he won’t let anything break their bond. Not time. Not spells. Not even a wild and reckless vampire queen…

I must say, I really enjoy reading books that that feature a kick a** heroine who isn't afraid to tell it like it is and get her hands bloody. Iona the Blood Queen had been imprisoned, trapped in a strange limbo between sleep and life. She can hear and smell all that is around her, but can't see over move. And she wants nothing more than to kill the werewolf alpha who placed spell upon her.

Jamie had heard rumors of the Blood Queen and knows that she is the only who can help him save his dwindling clan. Its a bonus that they share the same enemy - though Iona and Jamie are inherent enemies, he is a werewolf and she is a vampire.

This is yet another fantastic read and a great installment within the Bound series. Cynthia Eden shares some new ideas and takes on vampires, werewolves, and the paranormal romance genre in general. I love original ideas, they make the book stand out from the rest of the flooded genre. I've already got the next waiting for me on my Nook.If you love paranormal romance, are looking for past paced reads with a nice helping of sexiness that feature strong heroines and unyielding alpha males, I would highly recommend this series.

Three-Some Review: Sexy Shifters Shorts by Amanda Bonilla

Amanda Bonilla can write an amazing Urban Fantasy series with a great world and larger than life heroine. So I was curious when I saw she had written three shorts in the Paranormal Romance genre. And I jumped on them when she asked if I would be interesting in reading them. HELL YA.

All three shorts are connect in a way that a PNR series would be. Bonilla does a fantastic job of weaving the couples' story into one over all plot arc.

Even though each short is about 40 pages long, Bonilla has giving you what amounts to the cliff notes version of what could be three great full length novels.

In the first short, The Sweetest Torture, we meet the first couple, Cait and Logan. The two share a past that has stuck with them for the last 30 years. Both are weres that change into mountain lions. Cait has to go to Logan in order to help her father and pride. She has not forgiven Logan for his cheating on her all those years ago.

Logan hasn't had eyes for another female since Cait. He hasn't gotten over her not believing him when he tried to explain about that night 30 years ago. He has vowed to himself that once he gets Cait back in his life he will make her listen and understand.

Both Cait and Logan are strong and stubborn people. Both believe they are in the right. Both are still in love with the other person. It was fun watching the two come to turns with their past and what could be their future. And DAMN was there some smexy scenes.

The second short, The Sweetest Temptation, features Logan's brother, Andrew and a wood nympho, Erica.

The couple is thrown together by a BIG misunderstanding. Erica thinks that Andrew kidnapped her sister and had either harmed or killed her. Andrew has no clue to who Erica or her sister are.

After Erica uses her nymph magic on the local troopers, she kidnaps Andrew to find out where her sister is and if she is ok.

Things heat up between the two when Erica's nymph sexual nature takes over. They two heat up the pages while trying to piece together the mystery of Erica's missing sister.

The last and third short, The Sweetest Mercy, continues the story of Erica's missing sister, Keria and Carter.

Logan the alpha of the pride from the first short sends Carter to look for Keria and bring her home safely. Logan is a little more prepared for Keria's nymph background than Andrew was. But not by much.

Sure he knows that Keria is most likely in sexual need because of the full moon but he has no idea what kind of need she is going to put him in when they meet.

Carter does is job and then some saving Keria from the bad guy that helps thread the three stories together. Carter and his lion find their mate in the tiny and sexy nymph. But it's not just her sexy body that gets Carter's attention, its the fact that she is a strong female that can be his equal no matter how tiny she is.

I really enjoyed reading these shorts by Amanda Bonilla. All three could have easily been turned into full length novels. But Bonilla get a great job boiling down a long stories and making them very sweet treats for someone that needed a quick fix. If you are looking for some romance in bite size reads you should check out these Sexy Shifter shorts. But trust me you won't stop with one, you'll want to read them all back to back and you'll still have time left in your night to do other things. Maybe grab your sexy male and show him a few things that you read in Bonilla's smexy shorts about hot mountain lion shifters {wiggles brows}.

Review: Bound in Sin by Cynthia Eden

Bound in Sin
by Cynthia Eden
(Bound #3)

What’s the price of sin?

Human Paige Sloan once loved werewolf Drake Wyler more than life, but then that life was taken away from her. Attacked by vampires, Paige was bitten, and, on a cold, dark night, the life she’d known ended. She was reborn as a vampire—a werewolf’s deadliest enemy.

Paige ran from the vampires who attacked her, and she ran away from her lover. She didn’t want Drake to know what she’d become, and she didn’t want to face the fury of his pack. But a girl can only run for so long until the past catches up with her.

Some sins mark your soul.

When Paige learns that Drake is being targeted for death, she knows that she can’t hide in the shadows any longer. She has to return to him, and she will do anything—anything—in order to make sure that he keeps living. The vampires might have destroyed her chance to live and love Drake, but they won’t take him. Not over her undead body. She’ll slay them all…and maybe, just maybe…she’ll even have the chance to sin—one more time--with the werewolf who’d marked her as his mate.

Some sins are worth dying for...

Bound in Sin is another great novella in the Bound series.

Paige Sloan had loved werewolf Drake Wyler and, after she had been changed into a vampire, she knew she would never be able to back to her lover. But when she hears Drake’s life is in danger, she knows she has to return to Alaska to help him.

Drake Wyler never knew why Paige had left him and he certainly never expected she would show up on his door step years later as a vampire. He demands answers, why she had disappeared and why she has returned. But despite the fact she is now his enemy, he desires her more than ever.

The characters are wonderful together. Paige is strong and willing to fight for her man, literally, while Drake is sexy rough. Their romance is sizzling and the plot is filled with action, betrayal, and passion.

Cynthia Eden has done another amazing job.

Review: Bound in Darkness by Cynthia Eden

Bound by Darkness
by Cynthia Eden
Bound #2
eBook, 193 pages

Hunter...

When it comes to killing vampires, werewolf Cade Thain is the best slayer in the Northwest. So when a witch hires him to take out a pureblood vamp, the assassin thinks it will be just business as usual. One less vicious vamp on the streets... one more undead parasite gone from the earth. Then he meets her.

Protector...

Allison Gray isn't the prey that Cade expects. Beautiful, innocent, she stirs a dark desire within him. Allison hasn't transformed fully into a vampire, not yet, and it's Cade's job to make sure that she never does. Allison thinks that he's at her side to keep her safe, but Cade is supposed to pick the right moment --and kill her.

Lover...

Killing Allison is soon the last thing that Cade plans. As she begins the transformation that will turn her into a vampire, her bloodlust and their desire merge in an explosion of need that neither can control. But Allison's enemies are closing in, and the coming battle will take Cade and Allison beyond life, beyond love... and into a deadly darkness that waits to claim them both. Bound in Darkness.

Cade, a werewolf and an assassin, is hired by a witch to kill a pureblood vampire. In this series werewolves and vampires are natural enemies, but Cade really hates vampires - with good reason. So, eliminating one more bloodsucker is just another day's work. Until he meets his mark.

Allison is on the run and searching for the one man she was told could help her. After finding Cade in a seedy bar, she is shocked to learn that her savior was to be her executioner and that she is the same as the creatures that are hunting her - yep, she is a pureblood vampire and doesn't know it.

This was a super fast read, the romance was sweet and hot while the plot was a little too thin for me. I did like how the characters developed, especially Cade. Ms. Eden has a talent for writing sexy, irresistible alpha males and strong, sassy female leads to create a wonderful balance.

Now, there are two reasons why I gave this book 4 stars and not 5. First, Bound in Darkness is the second within the Bound series and even though it can be read as a stand alone, there were some inconsistencies between the first book and this one. Second, I would have liked some more layers to the plot, it seemed a bit flat to me.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. This series is quickly becoming one of my favorite.

Review: Bound by Blood by Cynthia Eden

Bound by Blood
by Cynthia Eden
Bound #1
eBook, 95 pages

It’s an Immortal War…
Vampires and werewolves have been blood enemies for centuries, but now a new threat is rising...demons are escaping from hell and those demons are intent on wiping out both the vamps and the werewolves.

When you have no one to trust…
In order to stop the demons, pureblood vampire princess Morgan LaBeaux agrees to the treaty offered by werewolf alpha Jace Vaughn. She'll mate with him, share her blood with him...and in return, the wolves will aid the vampires in this battle.

The enemy of my enemy my husband…
But Morgan doesn’t realize just how dangerous the wolves can truly be. Jace has been waiting years to claim her. He’s set a trap for his princess, and now that he has her, Jace doesn’t plan to let her go. He’ll send the demons back to hell, and he’ll keep his vampiress—forever.

Because the blood binds all.

Warning: This novella is a sexy paranormal romance. As such, it contains vampires, werewolves, and demons—oh, my! It also contains hot sex and adult language. You have been warned!

Bound by Blood is the first within the Bound series and I loved it! This book snared my interest from the start and I finished it one sitting - not many books can draw me in like that.

The story opens in a gritty werewolf bar. Morgan, vampire princess, is looking for the man that she has been sent to marry. Jace, who is a sexy, alpha werewolf, has been watching Morgan from afar for 10 years. (Originally, he had been sent to kill her, but fell in love with her instead) Now, he plans to make her his mate and to use her blood to become strong enough to close the door to Hell. Yep, mean, nasty demons are escaping from Hell and want to make Miami their home. The vampires and werewolves (natural enemies in this series) must work together to defeat the demons.

As for the romance, the connection between Morgan and Jace was instant and it was sweet to read the background story of Jace's feelings for his vampire mate. This was fast and a wonderful read complete with an interesting plot, sizzling scenes, betrayal, and action. I highly recommend this book and this series.

Review: Wicked As They Come by Delilah S. Dawson

Every month the Cocktail Society Book Club (on Goodreads) selects a read a book to review and discuss on the first Wednesday of each month. The host choses a cocktail that compliments the book, wither it's her favorite adult drink or one that is featured in the book.

Cocktail of the Month:

Since out heroine enjoys a few classes of red wine, I thought the best cocktail would be your favorite red wine. I'm not a huge wine drinker but I do enjoy a class of Merlot from Little Black Dress.

Classic and Timeless...

If you're passionate about Merlot, make Little Black Dress your "go to" red. This wine is rich with aromas of ripe black cherry, cranberry, and warm herb, complemented by hints of vanilla and toasted oak. This medium-bodied Merlot can seduce even the most experienced of palates with its nice lingering finish.

Wine Pairing: Excellent with meats or hearty foods.

Book of the Month:

This month's book is Wicked as They Come by Delilah S. Dawson, and it is the first book in the Blud series. It's truly a one of a kind story with Alice in Wonderland elements and blood thirsty bunnies.

Wicked as They Come
by Delilah S. Dawson
Blud #1

First in a steampunk-tinged paranormal romance series in which a woman is transported to a world filled with vampires and magic.

When nurse Tish Everett forced open the pesky but lovely locket she found at an estate sale, she had no idea she was answering the call of Criminy Stain, from the far off land of Sang. He’d cast a spell for her, but when she’s transported right to him, she’s not so sure she’s ready to be under the spell of another man. (It didn’t go so well last time with controlling, abusive, domineering Jeff.) If only Criminy wasn’t so deliciously rakish….

Half the inhabitants of Sang are Pinkies—human—and the other half are Bludmen, who in Tish’s world would be called vampires. But they don’t mess with any of the bat/coffin/no sunlight nonsense. They’re rather like you and me, just more fabulous, long living, and mostly indestructible. (They're also very good kissers.) But when the evil Mayor of Manchester (formerly Bludchester) redoubles his efforts to rid Sang of the Bludmen once and for all, stealing Tish’s locket in hopes of traveling back to her world himself for reinforcements, Criminy and Tish must battle ghosts, sea monsters, wayward submarines, a secret cabal, and thundering Bludmares to get the locket back and allow Tish to return home…but has she found love with Criminy? Could she stay in Sang forever?

Much like Tish I found myself thinking of Sang and Criminy during the day at work and wanting to get home at night so I can see him again. Dawson does an excellent job of creating a wonderfully bizarre world that brings to mind Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz with her own unique elements.

Just think if Alice instead of falling down a hole she fell asleep with a magical locket around her neck and woke up in a world where vampires are real but not as we know them. The vampire, or bludman in question is Criminy, the master of a traveling circus.

Wicked as They Come may not be everyone's cup of tea. Some might think it's a little to weird but I found it refreshingly different and was hooked from the beginning. The heroine is totally relatable and the hero is darkly delicious. The way Dawson wrote the world, Sang is easily a third man character of the book. Sang is much like our world but in a bizarro fantastical way. With it's cities named similar to the real world and then their the blud animals, like the bludbunnies, bludrats and bludmares.

Also liked the fact that Wicked as They Come ended with a happily ever after, for now. There's still some story left in Tish and Criminy's relationship and after speaking with Dawson in an interview she hopes to revisit them in the future to give us that ending they deserve.

“I would burn down the world for you," he whispered fiercely. "Your world or my own. I would rip down the entire city with my bare hands without a second thought. I don't need to taste anything else, I don't need a comparison.”

I recommend Wicked as They Come to anyone in the mood for something a little different from the norm in the PNR world and it's a great introduction for me into the steampunk genre.

To sum up Wicked as They Come: wonderfully weird romance.

Audio Review: Navarro's Promise by Lora Leigh

Navarro's Promise
by Lora Leigh
Breeds # 24
Narrated By Brianna Bronte
The breed guaranteed Mica no harm would come to her, but they never allowed for her sensual fascination with Navarro, or his unstoppable need to claim her as his mate, in both body and soul.

Hopes: I went in with hopes that series arc plot would progress and the Breeds series is a great smut fix. Some books focuse more on the couple and their hot hot sex. Others focus more on the arc and throws in hot sex as icing on the cake. And a few are a great blend of both.

Reality:  With 20+ books in the series the arc plot is going nowhere fast which is a real shame. The series is a hit or miss in this area. Navarro's Promise missed it's mark with the blending of both, series arc and sex. And leaned more toward the sex.

Couple:  Had hoped that Navarro and Mica would bring something a different to the table. But they fit into the series mold of Alpha male and reluctant mate. Same song, same dance.

Final Thought: With your rinse and repeat couples and a series arc going nowhere, the spark is gone. We shall part as friends. But I reserve the right to admin our relationship if Cassey ever gets her own book.

Narration Note:  Brianna Bronte does a really good job of narrating the book and I would like to check out more of her work. She does a nice range of voices for both male and female and her pacing had a natural flow to it. If I had read the book I don't think I would have picked up on the use of pussy so much as I did with the audio. I wonder what was going through Brianna's mind when she had to read that word about 10 mins in one sex scene. LOL

Review: Before the Moon Rises by Catherine Bybee

Before the Moon Rises
by Catherine Bybee
(Ritter Werewolves #1)

After a twelve-hour shift in a busy emergency room, Janet O’Brien is beat. Her last patient arrives unconscious and naked. She’s lead to believe he’s a psyche patient off his meds. However, once he awakens, Janet is charmed by his million-dollar smile and agrees to give him a ride home.

Werewolf, Max Ritter notices the sassy nurse when he wakes after a night under the full moon. Unfortunately, his archrival is drawn to Janet as well. In order to keep her out of harm's way, he opts to keep her close. When the chemistry between them sparks, Max discovers a completely new reason to keep Janet safe.

In this paranormal world there are werewolves. You could be born a werewolf or be changed into one. Those that are born have the option to accept the change and take wolf form every full moon or to remain human - if you transform once, you will always transform. These werewolves are not immortal, but that does not mean they aren't sexy.

Janet O'Brien was tired and more than ready to go home after a long shift in the E.R. The handsome, naked, unconscious man was to be her last patient of the day. Max Ritter did not expect to wake up in the E.R. nor did he count on the attractive, sassy nurse being his enemy's intended victim He knows he has to protect her, but struggles with revealing who and, more importantly, what he is.

Not wanting to risk leaving Janet alone. They spend the morning together and when she finally reaches her house (with Max in tow) she finds her place a wreck - someone had broken in. Believing it was a random burglary, she calls the cops, but Max knows his enemy was the culprit. Once they finished with the cops, Max insists she stay with him...As romance readers/lovers we all know where this is heading...

The best word I can come up with to describe this book is "cute". Max was charming and Janet was very easy going. The nontraditional take on werewolves was nice and the side characters were interesting. I would love to read more about Max's brother, Richard, who has been refusing the change for years despite his family's insistence. I have already added book 2 to my to read Nook shelf.

If you are looking for a werewolf fix and want something short and totally cute, I recommend Before the Moon Rises.

Audio Review: Dark Desires After Dusk by Kresley Cole

Dark Desires After Dusk
by Kresley Cole
(Immortals After Dark #6)
 Narrated by Robert Petkoff

A seductive beauty he can never have. Yet can't resist... Cadeon Woede will stop at nothing to atone for the one wrong that will haunt him forever. But once he secures the key to his redemption, the halfling Holly Ashwin, Cade finds that the woman he thought we could use for his own ends and then forget haunts him as much as his past.

A tormented warrior she should fear, but can't deny... Raised as a human, Holly never knew that some frightening legends are real until she encounters a brutal demon who inexplicably guards her like a treasure. Thrust into a sensual new world of myth and power, with him as her protector, she begins to crave the demon's wicked touch.

Surrender to dark desires... Yet just when he earns Holly's trust, will Cade be forced to betray the only woman who can state his wildest needs--and claim his heart?

This series only gets better with each book! Dark Desires After Dusk it the 5th full length book in the Immoratals After Dark series by Kresley Cole, and like many paranormal romance series you COULD read this one without reading the earlier books BUT WHY WOULD you? This series is some much fun and you get to see other characters before and after they find their mate. And you would miss all the hilarious Valkyriev moments.

So Dark Desires After Dusk is about a demon, Cade and a human Holly. Ever since Cade saw Holly he knew she was his mate but since she was only human he's stayed away. Why? Because humans and demons cannot mate. The humans would not make it through the claiming, so Cade has watched over his female from afar. Until....a group of immortals try to kidnap her. That's where everything gets turned upside down.

Cade and Holly embark on a road trip from hell in order to keep her safe. Sexual tension is high and emotions are running wild. Not to mention they everyone wants to kill Holly.

Cole really knows how to write a PNR with humor and high heat levels. And these books are fantasic on audio. Robert Petkoff brings these nutty characters to life. I'm sure I would not laugh as loud if I was reading the books. Robert puts so much dazzle into the Valkyriev women that he has me spitting my drink out at times. And he knows how to make the men with those yummy accents purr. Both the writing and narration for the IAD series is just top notch.

The audios for the series are slowing being released as Robert records them and I can't wait for the next audio, Kiss of a Demon King which releases May 7, 2013.
