Teaser Tuesday: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Teaser Tuesdays is a bookish meme hosted by Should Be Reading.

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share 2 "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

“Calla," Shay called from the hall. "Without your nakedness to distract me, I'm remembering that we're in serious trouble. Hurry, please."

“I didn't realize I needed to point out that if we are attacked by a fire-breathing bitch, you can change forms.”

2012 Immortal Reading Challenge

I will be keeping up with progress on my CHALLENGES page.
In fact I already have a list of books I plan on reading for this challenge. But I need some recommendations for the Fae category. I think you can all tell by my new blog design that I've already read the Fever series. I've started the Merry Gentry series by LKH so I guess I could always continue with that series. But please feel free to leave recommendations in the comments.

Vampires, angels, demons, werewolves and fae. If you can’t pick a favourite, then that’s okay!

At Under The Covers, we love them all! So let’s celebrate our love for all things immortal with 2012’s Immortal Reading Challenge.

Here’s the rundown:

1. The Immortals Reading Challenge runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. You can join at anytime from now and throughout the year. This is a 2012 challenge, so books read before January 1 will not count to your progress.
2. You pick your goal! Read as many books as you’d like for each species. This means that you can do just one category or all five or a combination of. The choice depends on you and your reading pace.
*We have chosen to have a three book per species standard. However, if this is a breeze for you, then feel free to tackle on the additional bonus entries of two more books of the same level.
3. Re-reads are acceptable.
4. Books chosen can be of any genre.
5. To participate, copy and paste this post on your blog along with the challenge button. We ask that you provide a link back to the sign-up page in case others wish to participate.
6. Readers without blogs can still participate! Keep track of your progress with Goodreads, Shelfari or LibraryThing.

To sign up:

1. Make a sign up post announcement, listing the level you've chosen and a list of books you plan to read. If you don't have a blog, post on GoodReads or another site as a thread where we can access your list of books. Be sure to take the image code above.

2. Come back here and using the list below, add your entry with a link directly to that post so we can see what you'll be reading.

You're done! Every month during 2012 we will make a challenge update post where you can come and updates us on how you're doing with your challenge.

Author Guest Post + Giveaway: Pavarti K. Tyler

Adventures in Inappropriate Content
by Pavarti K Tyler

My parents divorced when I was quite young and while my father put in the most valiant effort possible, it's difficult to maintain a relationship with a child when you live 4 states away.

My father's answer? Books.

When I was eight I received my first copy of The Hobbit in the mail. Once a week my father would call and we'd talk about what I read and how far I got. We finished the book and the only natural thing to do was continue this way. It gave us common ground, something to talk about and ease the transition from not talking to sharing our lives. It was especially helpful when he'd visit.

Once I read the Hobbit, my father purchased The Fellowship of the Rings for me, but, yeah, it wasn't my cup of tea. To be honest, I only read those because they were his favorite and he has read them (literally) from the beginning of the series to the end every year of my 33 years on this earth. I don't know how he does it. I'd rather claw my eyes out.

So when my Dad came to visit me the next time, he brought me another book. The Tommyknockers by Steven King. I was eight.

This was the beginning of my descent into a love affair with inappropriate content. With my father I read the Clan of the Cave Bear series (who doesn't love Caveman porn with Dad?), lots of Steven King, Dean R. Koontz and whatever he picked up at the bookstore. Sometimes he'd read something and then mail his copy to me; sometimes he'd just buy two.

To keep up with my father I became a voracious reader with a comprehension level well above my peers. I was basically given a one on one literary seminar once a week where-in I was expected to be able to articulate my thoughts on themes, characters, plot and subplots. This served me extremely well as a child because my vocabulary was extensive and my comprehension level made school a breeze.
However, I was reading The Tommyknockers at eight!

Because of this early literary education my understanding of "grade level" and "appropriate content" became deeply perverted. I am overwhelmingly thankful to my father for this. However, it has at times been an issue.
  • In tenth grade I argued adamantly with a teacher about the value of Anais Nin's work. I ended up in the principal's office for reading porn in class.
  • In eleventh grade I got a D on a paper for discussing the religious undertones in the relationship between father and daughter in The Grapes of Wrath.
  • In College I almost failed a class due to a paper titled "It Doesn't Matter Who You Fuck As Long As You're The One Doing The Fucking: Active vs Passive Homosexuality in Greco-Roman Culture". I took that one to the Dean to complain and she made the professor give me an A. *puts thumbs in ears and raspberries prof*
The list goes on. As an author I wrote Consumed By Love in the best way I knew how. It's errotic horror. No Erotica publisher would touch it due to the violent content and no horror publisher wanted it due to the erotic content (SNM Horror Mag did run it during Feb 2011 though, because they are awesome and recognized my true brilliance. Hi Steven! *waves*).

If you read my blog or follow my tumblr you are aware of the fact I live in a world filled with inappropriate content. I love it, I thrive on it. Not because I aim to shock or offend but because I don't feel the need to restrict my writing or my soul by standards others have placed on me.

My first novel, Two Moons of Sera, is a fantasy/romance which I am releasing in serial format. The first part will be published November 1, 2011 with the next coming in January 2012. It reads like a YA novel when you start and will continue to flow with the ease and fun of other popular novels targeted at young adults. However, I didn't want to write the next big teen hit. 2MOS is different in that it is targeted at adults.
I love reading YA books, don't get me wrong. My shelves are full of them. But more often then not I am left wanting. And the reason for that is these authors aren't able to tell the whole story. They stop short of the full human experience. I understand why and while my frustration is real it's due to no lack of skill or talent on the part of the author. I'm just looking for more.

With Two Moons of Sera I applied the storytelling and world building that draws people to Young Adult novels but allowed it to expand beyond the constraints of genre. I have reached into pure fantasy, a touch of sci-fi and as the story moves along come to explore romance.

Being an Indie Author has offered me such a fun opportunity to integrate that inappropriate content YA authors must shy away from. There are no longer rules about what I have to do or who I have to write for. Ahead of us lies a new adventure where authors can write what is true and readers can enjoy the full story.
Forever a trouble maker, I'm looking forward to breaking more rules.

Follow Friday

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted

This week's featured Bloggers are:

Books & Beyond

Q: It's Thanksgiving Day in the US, so we want to know what you are Thankful for - blogging related of course! Who has helped you out along the way? What books are you thankful for reading?

A: First a list of bloggers that have helped me out either by personal means or through there great posts on their blogs.

Lori @ Romancing the Darkside
Grace @ Livre De Amour

I meet Lori and Grace through Shelfari groups. Lori has given me some great advance for a bigger blogger when ever I've had questions and she always has great taste in books. Grace got me started reviewing books by asking me to be a guest review on her blog before I started The Book Nympho.

Rachel @ Paranjunkee

Rachel has helped a lot of us with her BB101 posts and featuring bloggers through the Follow Friday. She also recently gave The Book Nympho an awesome face lift with her magic wand and designing talent.

Carmel @ Rabid Reads

Carmel has a great new feature on her blog called Holler at a Blogger, which she featured The Book Nympho a couple weeks ago. She will feature a different blog each week that she has "stalked" for a week by leaving comments on their blog on different posts through out the week. This is a great feature that helps us find new blogs and also helps us keep in mind to reach out through leaving MEANINGFUL comments for each other.

Jen @ Red Hot Books

Through her HONEST reviews is helping me less shy about being more out spoken in my own reviews when I thought that maybe some of my thoughts might have been a little too much. So look out, I'm not holding back anymore. LOL

Thanks ladies! You all ROCK!

Books that I'm thankful for reading so far this year:

Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill
